It’s time to dig out some test instruments, peoples!
Now that I have a clamp meter, let’s see if I can measure the inrush of my large 28A variac, also known as The BIG DOGG.

In electrical systems, inrush is an effect caused by inductive loads and generally lasts for upto one quarter of a second after being powered-up directly unrestricted. (what’s referred-to as “Direct-On-Line”) Sometimes, on certain inductive loads may have a longer inrush time of a quarter of a second and as with motors, they will also have a start-up current as well.

For the first quarter of the first second, an inductive load will draw a significantly higher amount of current than what is specified on its specification plate, and as such, may cause tripping of circuit breakers. This can be countered by a technique called ‘soft-starting’.

Other techniques used to counter the effect (and nuisance tripping of circuit breakers) is to use a C-type circuit breaker or even a D-type in the cases of very high inrush and startup currents.

Due to the high inrush of the variac (variable auto transformer) which is seen in this video, this will trip a domestic type-1 circuit breaker if someone attempts to start it ‘Direct-On’Line’. Because of this, a kind of ‘soft-start’ will be used which will prevent the circuit breaker from tripping, yet the amount of ballasting is DOUBLE the amount (6kW) of what would be permitted on a standard UK wall socket (which is 3kW)

Because of this, even though I am using a type of soft-start technique, it is hoped that a current spike of upto 6kW (of having the same effect and time duration of inrush) will be detected and recorded by the clamp meter.

A quick burst of upto 6kW for upto half a second on a domestic wall socket will not harm the plug, socket, the wiring behind the socket or the wiring in the plug. I also very much doubt that the time duration of the inrush will be long enough or high enough to blow a 13A plug fuse.

We’ll have to see on that one, because if the plug fuse is blown by this experiment, then I will need to do a re-take with a lesser amount of ballasting on the wall socket!
