Be very cautious if you attempt this. The voltages produced by these transformers are in the tens of kilovolts, and there is enough current available to seriously harm you. Appropriate precautions should be taken, such as redundant insulation and light-up switches to indicate the device is on.

An interesting phenomenon was observed when I created a high voltage arc onto a large ceramic magnet. The arc fluctuated noisily and even seemed to rotate at a high speed when the arc formed in the centre of the magnet.

This is a flyback transformer from a cathode ray tube (CRT) style television I dismantled. If you decide to try to perform a similar experiment, please research the specific safety precautions that need to be taken when using high voltages and opening CRTs.

The driver circuit is a zero volt switching (ZVS) style driver, which is a self-resonation circuit. For detailed specs, email me or leave a comment. The MOSFETs I used are the popular IRFP250. In this video, I was running it at 12v from a lead acid battery. As you can tell from the video, it runs at a pretty high frequency.
