I show the wiring of a GFCI outlet. GFCI means Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter and it helps prevent shocks or electrocution around water. This is in the Chicago area. USA.
Building codes after 1993 require outlets within 6 feet of all wet locations (for example bathroom, kitchen sinks, exterior outlets) to be a GFCI outlet.
To install a GFCI outlet:
First check the existing outlet with a circuit tester.
Turn off the breaker or fuse to the outlet and check to make sure the power is off.
Remove the outlet cover and old outlet. If you are replacing an existing GFCI, make note of which side is the line side. It will be marked on the back of the outlet.
If you have a circuit that has one cable with 2 or 3 wires entering the box, you will only be using the line side of the new GFCI.
If your circuit continues onto another outlet, you will have a second cable with additional 2 or 3 wires that will be connected to the load side of the new GFCI. This will feed the electric to another outlet. All outlets on the load side of the GFCI will be protected.
If you have a box with one cable and 2 wires plus a ground, you will connect the black wire to the gold screw on the line side and the white wire to the silver screw. You will connect the ground (if you have it) to the green or ground screw. If you can’t tell which wire is black, you can turn on the breaker or replace the fuse and test which wire is hot. This is the wire you will connect to the gold screw.
Turn off the breaker or remove the fuse before attaching the wires.
If you have a box that feeds another outlet, you will connect the line side as we explained and then connect the additional wires to the load side, connecting the black wire to the gold screw and the white wire to the silver screw.
Wrap the outside of the screws on the new GFCI with electrical tape to prevent the screws or wires from touching the box.
Screw the new GFCI into the box and put on the cover.
Turn on the electric to the circuit.
Test the new GFCI with the tester to make sure it is working. Press the test button on the GFCI and the electricity should shut off.
Press the reset button and it should restore the flow of electricity.
You should test the GFCI once a month.
