This is an extremely simple BFO style metal detector demonstration using two basic coil / inductor oscillators running at about 430kHz producing an audible beat frequency in the presence of metal objects.
How it works:
This particular arrangement “looks” like a typical Double D style coil arrangement, but don’t let it fool you. A “DD” has one drive coil and one receive coil. In this case both coils are being driven. When two coils that are driven share the same plane they will mutually oscillate and seek the same frequency. The magic happens when the coils overlap slightly. When they overlap at a certain point there is a balance where the mutual oscillation goes away and they don’t influence each other, allowing them to freely oscillate and become easily altered by their environment … i.e. a metal object.
The Idea is to place the two coils in this overlapping arrangement so that they are JUST on the edge of influencing each other at the same oscillation, but are very susceptible to being altered externally. This type of detector has a slight advantage over a standard BFO in that “both” coils are near the sense field which help to minimize any ground effects you might otherwise have using a single coil near the sense field. Ground effects are caused by soil variations, such as mineral content, moisture, etc. Since both coils experience virtually the same ground conditions (unless passing over a metallic object), ground effects are mathematically canceled out leaving you with a higher signal to noise ratio when detecting.
