USE:

DISCLAIMER: When replacing a capacitor, make sure the new capacitor has same exact uf ratings as the old capacitor, and can handle same voltage or higher as the old capacitor, and make sure new capacitor is wired the same way as the old one (wire colors may be different as the ones on old capacitor, so you must wire them based on uf ratings). The motor may burn out otherwise. Also, the capacitor MUST be shorted out before being removed, capacitor stores charge even when power is off, and can shock you if you don’t short it out. This video shows how to replace the right capacitor on ceiling fan the right way. It usually repairs ceiling fans that lost speeds/slowed down and/or “died completely”, but can still spin freely when pushed by hand. Capacitors fail much more often than motor windings do, and it’s better to repair a ceiling fan than to get a new one because companies had been trying to make things cheap and still make money, meaning that new products today are generally built more poorly than products made at older times. Motor windings are generally impedance protected and would almost never really burn out. Motor only burns out when winding insulation breaks down, which would be like a fire hazard and companies try not to let it happen. Sorry if not all steps are recorded, some steps require 2 hands, and I needed a hand to hold a camera.

The capacitor can be shorted out in different ways, but it MUST be shorted out. If the fan is wired to same circuit breaker as light fixtures (which includes light on fan or light separate from fan), you can pull the fan chain like 5 times with circuit breaker OFF and light set ON. You can also short the capacitor out by connecting fan hot wire to one simple light fixture wire, and neutral fan wire to another simple light fixture wire, then pull the fan chain like 5 times with light fixture set ON with working light bulb, and have no power going into the fan.

Parts needed:

New capacitor
Wire nuts if you needed to cut the wires

Tools needed:

Screwdrivers that are required to get to the capacitor
Wire stripper if you need to cut the wires
Paperclip if you need to take the wires out of chain switch
Pliers if you have trouble removing chain nuts or other parts by hand

You can try ordering a new capacitor from the fan company, if you can find the company name and model number and the company is still in business. I would NOT recommend searching for this identical fan on the internet to find out the company and model number, because some identical looking fans can have completely different motor and different capacitor values. I would recommend finding out by looking up the model number and brand name written on the fan. If capacitor still has “uf” legibly written on it, and if you can find the capacitor with same exact uf ratings that can handle same voltage or higher, that capacitor would also be good to go on that fan. If both cases fail, you may have to have a contact with fan collectors to find out what the correct capacitor ratings is. However, I will say that many fans made before 1960 have shaded pole motor and do not have capacitor anywhere. Ceiling fan with permanent split capacitor motor was introduced around 1950s, and even then, there were still some ceiling fans ceiling fans with shaded pole motor being made until around 1980s.

Anyways, this is a Hampton Bay Waterton which was originally my relative’s fan, and capacitor was bad for over 10 years, and they decided to replace this fan this year, and i got to keep this fan, and I was able to find a new capacitor with same ratings and replace that capacitor. The fan spins fast again with a brand new capacitor.
