Modern vehicles have a whole assortment of features geared to improve fuel economy and preserve the life of the different components, which are often expensive. In the mid nineteen nineties manufacturers started using the dual speed fuel pump. The idea behind this technology is to run the fuel pump at lower speeds while at idle and during cruising. Clearly the fuel needed during these conditions is at a minimum. Then, at wide open throttle and during start-up the fuel pump circuit switches to high speed to deliver the needed fuel. It is also important to understand that throughout the fuel pump speed variations, the fuel pressure doesn’t change. What changes is the fuel flow to the engine. It is therefore, also possible to implement a variable speed fuel pump system for your vehicle, especially if you own an older car with a hard to find fuel pump. The lower fuel pump speed also goes easier on the fuel pressure regulator and the entire fuel system as a whole. Another precept of the variable speed fuel pump is that it eliminates hot fuel from going back to the tank generating air polluting vapors. Remember to use common sense when working with fuel. In this wiring arrangement you won’t have to touch the fuel at all, but if you do use caution and whatever you do, you do so at your own risk.
