Quercus Technical Services provides supplemental training and education for high voltage in accordance with the new requirements set within the STCW Convention.

Seafarers need to have undergone this supplemental training programme before 2017 in order to maintain a valid status of their seafarer’s certificate of competence (CoC). This change is in force internationally and has been included in the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention.

Quercus is the first company in the Netherlands to be certified to provide the STCW high voltage training programme in accordance with the STCW-tables A-III/1 and A-III/2. The training programme is a one-off programme, and is meant for individuals holding a seafarer’s certificate of competence as engineer officer, second engineer, chief engineer or maritime officer.

The STCW training programme is also required for ships that are not fitted with high voltage installations, as this ensures that seafarers are employable and deployable in the full scope of the maritime industry.

The five-day training programme consists of parts theory and practice. During the programme, all parts of high voltage installations are covered, such as: transformers, high voltage cables and main switchboards.

Candidates will also perform practical assignments through use of a generator simulator. Afterwards, theory is applied in practice in our high voltage training centre.

Candidates conclude the training programme by way of a theory and practical exam. The theory exam consists of multiple choice questions, whereas the practical exam consists of performing operations for commissioning, decommissioning and securing an installation.

If the exams are concluded with success, the candidates will receive an official STCW high voltage certificate.

Please note: each and every engineer officer and maritime officer with a seafarer’s certificate of competence has to have concluded this training programme before January 1st 2017. So act quickly and don’t miss out!
