Das Geschäft mit getriebelosen Mühlenantrieben läuft — und zwar so gut, dass ABB entschieden hat die Produktion zu forcieren und in der Schweiz — genauer in Kleindöttingen und Birsfelden – die Fertigung dieser gigantischen Ringmotoren aufzubauen um der weltweiten Nachfrage optimal nachkommen zu können.

ABB is world market leader in the gearless mill drives (GMD) business. GMD systems consist of transformers, an E-house and a ring motor – giant electric motors with the mill itself acting as a rotor and the surrounding ring as stator. An ABB ring motor can achieve an outer diameter of 24 meters, with a capacity of up to 28 MW. GMDs are typically installed in copper, gold and iron ore mines but can be applied for cement mills as well. 

As a variable speed drive, the GMD allows the mill to start smoothly, without any mechanical stress, and fulfills the customer’s requirements for flexibility and adjustability of the process, enabling maximum control over the grinding process. Furthermore, ABB gearless mill drive systems feature several benefits when compared with conventional geared drive systems: superior reliability, availability, extended life span and improved energy efficiency.
