Randy, on staff Contractor for http://www.UniqueVanities.com explains a common cause of electrical fires and suggestions of what to do to put them out when they occur.

Transcription: Hello, my name is Randy. I’m here with www.uniquevanities.com. Our ask the contractor question for the day is, how do electrical fires start and how do you put them out. Well, first of all, how an electrical fire starts is generally too much power is being consumed. So if you have—if somebody had wired the place and didn’t know what they were doing and they put too small of a wire on too large of circuit breaker or fuse. Then of course somebody plugged something into it that draws more than what the wire is rated for, that’s going to cause the insulation and the connections to heat up and it could start a fire that way. If there is a damaged wire, say somebody runs a screw through a stud and it hits a wire or a staple is put in too tight, these are just a couple of the many things that could start an electrical fire. Too large of a light bulb in a light fixture can actually start an electrical fire. Most of the time it’s improper wiring or loose connections where wires make and then breaking connection. It will make a spark and of course the spark leads to a fire.

Second part of that question is what to do if you have one. Well, first and foremost, you need to call 911, Don’t try, and put it out on your own. Just call the fire department. Then you can start looking for the source. So you need to go to the circuit breaker panel. Instead looking for what breaker it’s on just flip the main off. The quicker you can get electricity to stop flowing through that circuit, the better off you’re going to be. If it’s already started something else on fire, the only thing you can use is a dry chemical fire extinguisher. Obviously, you don’t want to pour water or use any type of fire extinguisher that’s not meant for electricity. That could cause serious injury to yourself or anyone that’s using it. So an ABC dry chem fire extinguisher is the best way to do it. If it gets out of control, the best thing is just wait for the fire department to show up. I hope this helps.
